Working with children to improve their communication skills brings immense joy, fulfillment, and purpose to many pediatric speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Personally, I love how funny and unexpected children can be. They always keep you on your toes and push me to be at the top of my game. They will let you know if they like an activity you have created for them (or if they don’t like it).
1. Innocence and Wonder
Children possess a natural sense of innocence, curiosity, and wonder that is infectious and inspiring. Their unbridled enthusiasm for learning, exploring, and experiencing the world around them reminds us to see the beauty and magic in everyday moments. Working with kids allows us to tap into our own sense of wonder and rediscover the joy of discovery and exploration.
2. Creativity and Imagination
Kids have boundless imaginations and creativity, which they express through play, storytelling, art, and imaginative play. As pediatric SLPs, we have the privilege of nurturing and encouraging their creativity, helping them develop their unique talents and interests, and watching their imaginations soar.
3. Resilience and Growth
Children possess a remarkable capacity for resilience and growth, even in the face of adversity or challenges. Working with kids allows us to witness their resilience firsthand as they navigate life’s ups and downs, overcome obstacles, and emerge stronger and more resilient than before. It’s incredibly rewarding to play a role in supporting and empowering children to overcome challenges and reach their full potential.
4. Genuine Connections
There’s something special about the genuine connections and bonds that form between adults and children. Whether it’s a teacher inspiring a student, a healthcare professional comforting a scared patient, or a counselor providing guidance and support, these connections are based on trust, empathy, and mutual respect. Working with kids allows us to form meaningful relationships that can have a lasting impact on both parties.
5. Making a Difference
Perhaps the most profound reason why we love working with kids is the opportunity to make a difference in their lives. Whether it’s helping them learn new skills, overcome obstacles, discover their passions, or simply providing a safe and nurturing environment, our work has a direct and tangible impact on the lives of children and their families. There’s no greater reward than knowing that we’ve played a part in shaping a child’s future and helping them reach their full potential.
Working with kids is a privilege and a responsibility that comes with immense rewards and joys. From witnessing their innocence and wonder to nurturing their creativity and resilience, the reasons why we love working with kids are as diverse and abundant as the children themselves.
